With little to no fanfare and following the swollen monsoon that was the late November push, Codemasters delivers one of its seminal racing games, Pro Race Driver, to the unknowing masses (the other being Colin McRae Rally 3.0, due this spring). Interestingly enough, Pro Race Driver follows up yet another obscure but nonetheless great racing game, Jarrett and LaBonte Stock Car Racing, which in turn was formed from the popular European racer Toca Racing, otherwise known as touring car racing.

Well, going strictly by the presentation, it fares quite well. PRD manages to capture a very movie-esque direction and narrative, hitting all the stops, from licensing very well-known songs tailored to particular scenes to individually modeling a sizeable cast of very lifelike characters who have no other use but telling the story during cut scenes. Direction is all for naught without a script, right? Well, kind of. The story here isn't exactly mind-bending, nor is it even very compelling, but it works in the same sense that the plot in a Vin Diesel movie works: it's shallow, somewhat entertaining, but obviously only a device to carry the action.

They also try to make Pro Race Driver more than just a racing game by adding a little drama to keep things interesting. Basically the overall story is that you are Ryan McKane and you?re from a well known racing family trying to distinguish yourself from your brother who is supposedly the best at racing. You mission throughout the game is to try to dethrone your brother. Impressive graphics, semi-real driving simulation, and a RPG like twist make Pro Race Driver distinguish itself from other racing games. But of course, I have to be picky and point out all the problems I have with this game and how frustrating it can be.
